Clinical Associate Professor
Duncan Stanford

MBBS, MSc(Med), FACD, FACMS

Duncan is a Specialist Dermatologist – Fellow of the Australasian College of Dermatologists (FACD).

TRAINING:

  • Completed his medical degree at the University of Sydney in 1990
  • Completed a Master of Science (Medicine) by thesis at the University of New South Wales in 1996, conducting research on the sun protective qualities of fabric which informed the Australian Standard for the current UPF rating scheme for clothing
  • Between 1997 and 2000 he undertook 4 years of dermatology specialty training at Prince of Wales Hospital, John Hunter Hospital, Westmead Hospital and The Skin and Cancer Foundation and became a Fellow of the Australasian College of Dermatologists in 2001
  • In 2001 he completed the Mohs Surgery and Laser Fellowship at the Skin & Cancer Foundation (The Skin Hospital) at Westmead and became a Fellow of the American College of Mohs Surgery in 2002

Duncan was keen to work and live in a regional area and in 2002 he opened South Coast Dermatology in Kiama. He established a Mohs surgery unit at Wollongong Day Surgery in 2020, after providing a Mohs service for Southern NSW patients at The Skin Hospital (Westmead) for over 15 years.

He is a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Wollongong with a special interest in medical education and assessment. He has a long-standing commitment to selecting, teaching and examining medical students, as well as training dermatology and general practice registrars in a private practice setting. He is a former Chief Examiner, Procedural Examiner and NSW Censor for the Australasian College of Dermatologists. He is a former Assistant Editor of the Australasian Journal of Dermatology.

He was awarded a Certificate of Meritorious Service from the Australasian College of Dermatologists in 2016.

He is co-editor and author of two textbooks: “Dermatologic Surgery: A Manual of Defect Repair Options” now in its 2nd edition” published by McGraw Hill, and its companion publication “Clinical Cases in Dermatologic Surgery”.

Clinical Associate Professor John McAlpine

MBBS, Dip. Obs. RACOG, Master GP Psychiatry, FRACGP

John initially worked as a Rural General Practitioner in Tumut before being part of the Gerringong Medical Practice for 22 years. During this time, he developed a special interest in the diagnosis and treatment of skin cancers and now solely works in this field. He has been a member of the South Coast Dermatology team since 2010. As an Associate Professor in the University of Wollongong Graduate School of Medicine, he has a role in examining medical students and teaching skin procedures.
John lives in Minnamurra where he cycles, plays tennis and appreciates the nearby river activities. Together with his wife, they run relationship enhancing events locally and internationally.

Dr Ingrid Buchner

Dr.Med(Ger), DipPaed, FRACGP

Ingrid did her medical degree in Germany and started her medical career in anaesthetics, intensive care and emergency medicine. After moving to Australia with her family in 1998 she completed her training in general practice and was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (FRACGP) in 2007.
She has undertaken further study in skin cancer management completing the RACGP Certificate of Primary Care Dermatology. Ingrid has been part of the team at South Coast Dermatology since 2020 and provides skin checks and treatment of skin cancers. She is also involved with medical student and registrar training.
Ingrid is a Kiama local and outside work enjoys reading, family life and spending time being active in the great Australian outdoors, staying sun safe of course.

Professor Rod McMahon

MBBS, DRCOG, ADD, IDD, MMED, FAIM, FRACGP

Rod completed his medical degree at the University of Sydney. He is a long-standing resident of the Illawarra and was a pioneer in the development of GP Training in the Illawarra region.
He has an extensive history of governance, serving as Chairman of the Medical Staff Council for Wollongong Hospital, as representative of the NSW Faculty of RACGP, the National RACGP board and NSW AMA Illawarra Representative. Additionally, he was on the NSW Medical Board and the Practitioner Service Review Agency for many years.
Rod has extensive experience as a General Practitioner and has a Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners. He is the Medical Director of Dapto Medical Centre and is also the Principal Doctor in their Skin Cancer Clinic. He has additional qualifications and extensive experience in the diagnosis and treatment of Skin Cancer. He is a Professor of Practice at the University of Wollongong.

Dr Mark Burgess

MBBS, FRACGP

Mark was born in Wollongong and lived in several east coast towns before settling in Kiama with his wife and three children in 2007. He studied medicine at the University of Wollongong and has worked in Illawarra and Shoalhaven hospitals and several general practices. He has been working at Gerringong Medical Practice since 2016.
He has a special interest in skin cancer medicine and has worked with dermatology and plastics specialists and a public leg ulcer clinic. He has a Professional Certificate in Dermoscopy and in Skin Cancer Surgery. He enjoys educating not only his patients but students and junior doctors learning their profession. He is a Clinical Senior Lecturer at the University of Wollongong Graduate School of Medicine and an Accredited Supervisor for the RACGP’s Australian General Practice Training program.
Outside work, Mark loves outdoor adventures, particularly hiking and kayaking. He coaches local sports teams, plays touch footy and is a cricket fanatic.

Dermatology Nurse Team

Our team of dermatology nurses are highly skilled and trained to provide a range of services. Our nurses assist with surgical procedures and undertake wound care. They also provide treatments such as UV phototherapy and photodynamic therapy under supervision from our doctors.

Alice Johnson RN

Biologics Nurse

Alice completed her Bachelor of Nursing at the University of Wollongong. She has worked as a dermatology and laser nurse with South Coast Dermatology since 2005. Over that time, she has developed extensive skills in administering a range of dermatologic treatments such as UV therapy, laser and photodynamic therapy. She has a special interest in the use of biologic medications which have revolutionised the treatment of numerous skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema and hidradenitis suppurativa. Alice works closely with Dr Stanford and patients on these medications to ensure the best possible care for these patients.
Alice grew up in Gerringong and in her spare time she can be found running marathons and hanging out with her kids.
